Climate Strategy Gives SMEs a Competitive Edge
Reference: The Danish Industry Foundation
How can Danish SMEs ensure their competitiveness as clients are increasingly demanding climate action? Answer: by analysing their CO2 emissions and setting clear targets for reductions. Viegand Maagøe helps Danish SMEs form proactive climate strategies.
The project: Ensuring the competitiveness of Danish SMEs
For the SMEs, the majority of their clients are big companies which in these years are committing to reducing their CO2-emissions, using e.g. Science Based Targets. This requires knowledge of the total amount of emissions throughout the value chain. Therefore, large companies are increasingly demanding that their SME-suppliers are aware of their own CO2 footprint and willing to formulate and follow a climate strategy.
The project is supported by The Danish Industry Foundation. Viegand Maagøe is behind the project along with DI, Fremstillingsindustrien, UNGC Network Danmark, Axcelfuture and Aalborg University.
Viegand Maagøe advise the 50 SMEs participating in the project by introducing the several different aspects of formulating a climate strategy. 15 of our employees advise the participants using their expertise in climate accounting, life cycle analysis, the GHG protocol, Science Based Targets, communication and branding.
Viegand Maagøe is responsible for:
- Calculating direct and indirect CO2 emissions (scope 1, 2 and 3)
- Creating a strategy for reducing CO2 emissions with concrete recommendations and actions in the company
- Developing a marketing and communications plan aimed at clients of the SMEs
The results: Preparing SMEs for the green transition
The participating SMEs were provided with a strong, strategic foundation consisting of insight into their carbon footprint and an initial climate strategy focused on increasing their competitiveness.
Thus, project Klimaklar SMV is a leg up in the green transition of Danish SMEs. As a continuance of the project, it is the intention to use the experiences of the 50 participants to help other Danish SMEs to prepare for the green transition.
