For the past 15 years, Peter Maagøe Petersen has developed Viegand Maagøe into a leading international advisor on the green transition. This Wednesday he turns 60 years old.

It was not the engineering study, but rather the subsequent PhD that set the direction for Peter Maagøe Petersen’s career. Viegand Maagøe’s co-founder turns 60 today, and many of the company’s projects stem from Peter’s love for industrial plants.

The love for large energy plants started at a PhD course at DTU in 1989, where he was introduced to Tuborg’s refrigeration system in Hellerup, North of Copenhagen.

“It was the first large energy system I analyzed, and I concluded it was running poorly, which meant Tuborg wasted thousands of kroners. In many ways, it is the same work I do today. When I face something really difficult, it’s cool to find a solution that combines technology and economy,” says Peter Maagøe Petersen.

Unique culture

Peter Maagøe Petersen began his career as a consultant at COWI. But in 2006, his inner entrepreneur drove him to create his own business.

In a partnership with Jan Viegand, the two engineers established Viegand Maagøe. With a holistic focus on high professionalism, they wanted to promote energy savings among customers.

Today, the focus has expanded to sustainability, and Viegand Maagøe’s approx. 60 employees advise broadly on the green transition – from climate communication to financial analyzes.

“A few years ago, the employees built our company values around four core values: Holistic, high professionalism, propriety and sustainability. It made me happy, because the same values were important to Jan and me when we founded the company 15 years ago. I think we have a unique culture, and I hope that we can preserve it, even though we are growing and getting more projects in Denmark and abroad,” says Peter.

Peter advises on energy conservation, climate questions, and utility systems. He helps companies with action plans, energy management, and energy audits. In his leisure time, Peter concentrates on his family and the ongoing renovation of his house.

With a lot of traveling to for example Ireland, the USA and Mexico, Peter has also helped to promote new energy legislation. What makes him most proud, however, are the young talents he has nurtured and supported in their development.

“I regularly teach at DTU, and I always encourage students to do an exam project with us. I simply love the interaction between our projects with our customers and the new talented employees,” says Peter Maagøe Petersen.

Privately, you can find Peter Maagøe Petersen with his family in Birkerød – except when he is out sailing in his sailboat. Later this year, he is co-organizer of “Sundet Rundt” in Øresund.
