LCA

EPDs are certified Environmental Product Declarations, primarily used in the construction sector, that help document the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle.

Actors in the construction sector is increasingly required to provide reliable data on the climate and environmental impact of products and materials. The requirements are a part of a generally increased focus on sustainable construction, and with an EPD you can position yourself in the market, as it is used as documentation to obtain points for certification for green buildings and to meet legal requirements.

We develop both environmental product declarations (EPDs) and carry out life cycle assessments (LCAs) for construction products.

Our team of LCA consultants has experience in preparing EPDs for a variety of products, and is used to working with EPD program operators in Denmark (EPD Denmark) and Germany (IBU).

Methods

We follow the European standard EN15804-A2, and the EPDs we produce are published by recognized program operators such as IBU (Germany) and EPD Denmark, but we can work with others too, if you wish to use a different program operator.

EPD deliverables

  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  • Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
  • Guidance on data collection and analysis
  • Publication by recognized program operators
  • Summary and interpretation of environmental impacts
  • Handover of environmental hotspots for products

How we help you through the process

EPD

  1. Project launch
Our EPD advisor will thoroughly review the process at a start-up meeting, after which we will clearly define which data you need to collect for use in the calculations. This can be, e.g. the consumption of materials and energy.
  2. Mapping
We ensure that the correct system boundaries are established and assist in making assumptions for, e.g., end-of-life scenarios.
  3. Data collection
We advise you in the process of collecting data and help identify solutions in case of data gaps.
  4. Modeling life cycles
All activities in the product’s life cycle are mapped and linked to activity data.
  5. Life Cycle Assessment
We conduct an LCA that forms the foundation for the EPD. The LCA is documented in an LCA report, which details all decisions made during the modeling process and includes analyses of the results.
  6. EPD reporting
We compile the results in an EPD report according to standardized guidelines.
  7. Verification and publication
Once the EPD is approved, it is published through the chosen EPD program operator to ensure public access and inclusion in relevant databases.
  8. Reporting
We deliver the LCA report and a link to the published EPD, and review the results with you, focusing on environmental hotspots and opportunities for reduction.

Are you interested in an EPD or want to know if it is right for your company, we are ready to help. Reach out to Lasse, who has extensive experience in conducting LCAs and developing EPDs for construction products, as well as waste management and the development of carbon footprint calculators.

What is EPD and LCA?

LCA is the basis for EPDs and is used to quantify the environmental impact of your products from cradle to gate or cradle to grave. EPDs can be made for specific products or for groups of products, and are in principle a certified summary of one or more LCAs.
