The environmental impact on the OC frame system intended for Letbek

Letbek makes, among other things, window sills for construction, and their customers need to know the environmental impact of the product for use in the LCA for the entire building.

About the task

The EPD has enabled Letbek to share credible documentation about the climate and environmental impact of their product. This enables their customers to use this data for building LCAs, which is a requirement for large, public buildings.

The EPD can be viewed on the IBU website

How we did it

Phase 1: Consulting

Viegand Maagøe advised Letbek on which EPD type, which PCR and which program operator they should use to prepare the EPD for the product “OC Frame system”, to cover the specific needs for documentation.

Phase 2: Preparation

Since it is a requirement to model most of the life cycle in EPDs according to EN15804+A2, the entire production process at Letbek was mapped. After this, the processes that needed to be modeled in order to calculate the environmental impacts could be identified and the collection of relevant production data started. This also included mapping subcontractors, and a scenario was determined for the end-of-life of the product based on the most likely waste management of the OC frame system.

Phase 3: Calculation and documentation

The LCA was calculated and everything was documented in an LCA report. The choice of EPD program operator fell on IBU, where the EPD was created and sent for verification together with the LCA report.

EPDs are in demand for Outercore, but are not yet a requirement. However, the fact that we already have the EPDs ready shows that we are serious suppliers. Viegand Maagøe certainly helped us through the process, and they have a good understanding of the challenges that companies like ours face.
