Develop Science Based Targets (SBTi) with validable and realistic targets – and anchor the targets to create value across a complex business.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has become the international standard for climate targets in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. In short: SBTi helps you set reduction targets that you can document professionally and explain credibly.
When you work with SBTi, you commit to concrete reductions and ongoing follow-up.
For larger companies, it is not a limited submission project, but a strategic process across the organization. You must translate climate accounting and business plans into goals that suit your company – and a plan to achieve them.
For a complex business, SBTi is rarely a single project. It is a course where you must clarify scopes and target types, document the baseline and describe reduction paths with the greatest effect.
In practice, you often have to work with scenarios and priorities. For example:
The next step is to anchor the goals: clear roles, responsibilities, KPIs and decision-making processes, so that SBTi becomes part of your way of managing the business.
SBTi cannot stand alone – it requires at least a carbon account and a climate strategy.
You can get help with each individual element from us – or get a complete process from carbon accounting to strategy, SBTi goals, implementation, reporting and communication with a high reuse of data and documentation.
You get an overview of requirements, roles, timeline and choice of approach. For example , scopes, target types and which business units are to be covered.
The carbon accounts are quality assured and key assumptions like sensitive scope 3 categories are documented.
Specific SBTi targets are prepared, and assumptions, delimitations and choices are described: How quickly and how much do you want to reduce?
Goals are linked to efforts and decisions on, for example, procurement policies, CAPEX priorities or supplier programmes. At the same time, KPIs and governance are defined.
Documentation is gathered, targets are submitted to SBTi, and clarifying questions and adjustments are taken into account.
The goals are translated into clear messages without greenwashing in the ongoing reporting to e.g. management, key functions and use in PR.
When communicating about SBTi, you must be both clear and precise. Investors, customers and employees want to know:
Your communication must be coherent across channels: Investor and customer dialogue, annual report, sustainability report, website, PR and employer branding. A story with a clear red thread can strengthen the profile without greenwashing.
Joining SBTi requires an effort. We know this both from our experience of helping some of the largest companies and organizations, and because we ourselves have joined SBTi as the first green advisor in Denmark.
This helps us to give you the best process, where you can feel confident that together we create the greatest value for your company.
The Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) is a broad UN collaboration that defines a clear path for your contribution to reduction targets in line with the Paris Agreement. At Viegand Maagøe, we have joined the Science Based Targets ourselves, so we know the requirements that must be met from both sides of the table.
