Behavioral campaign gives children good energy habits

How can children in the municipality of Gentofte learn about good energy habits? We have put together an effective behavioral change campaign which makes it fun to save water, heat, light, and electricity.

The task

Viegand Maagøe has in collaboration with the municipality of Kolding developed a behavioral change campaign for day cares. The children learn about energy through storytelling, activities, and theory. They learn what energy is, where it comes from, and how to save it.

In the municipality of Gentofte, the campaign resulted in energy aware children with a sharp sense of wasteful energy both in the kindergarten and at home.

How we solved the task

We put together a campaign using our core competences to make complex information accessible and action-oriented which helps making energy savings an objective of pedagogy in day cares. The goal of the campaign is to create specific behavioral changes primarily in children but also in pedagogues and parents.

The campaign runs three parallel courses:

  • Course for children
    – Book about Snif the energy agent
    – “Energy agent”-gear
    – Games and activities
  • Course for pedagogues
    – Campaign manual
    – Activities booklet
  • Course for the outside world
    – Letter to parents
    – PR in local media

All courses and material are a part of the concept ”Energy savings at children’s level” which can be adjusted to fit specific desires and needs.

The campaign material was created in close collaboration with a pedagogue, communications and energy experts. This ensures that the material has a pedagogical perspective, nudging and is based on a solid professional foundation in energy.

Online game with the fox Snif

As an addition to the physical materials and activities, the children can sit slumped back in the couch meanwhile helping Snif the energy agent sniff out wasted energy in the games “Snif”, “Become an agent with agent Snif” and “Snif’s Great Energy Hunt”.

All games are meant for children aged 3 to 6 and are accessible on iPad and desktop.

Press bundle

As part of the campaign, we also do press stories to be in both local and national media.

In the municipality of Gentofte, the presswork resulted in i.a. articles in Villabyerne (Villa cities) and Teknik & Miljø (Tech and Environment) where it is emphasized how the early effort to make children aware of the issue is beneficial long-term.
